Last week, HPE Discover was held at the Venetian in Las Vegas, Nevada. HPE Atmosphere was combined with HPE Discover, making for a much larger attendance than previous years.

Antonio Neri, HPE CEO, provided the Keynote Address in the Sphere, the first keynote to happen in this venue. Antonio said, “Data is your most valuable asset.” With that in mind, he discussed AI’s advancement and HPE’s commitment to proceed ethically.

On Tuesday, Ken Scudder and Paden Holenstein presented Advanced Data Resilience and Recovery for Mission Critical Systems with HPE Shadowbase Software to a very engaged audience at the Connect Worldwide booth:

  • Paden and Ken reviewed the HPE Digital Resilience Framework and the solutions that help protect and recover mission critical HPE NonStop data from Ransomware and Malware attacks.
  • With new regulations, such as DORA, it is important to follow best practices such as data validation.
  • Different architectural options were also reviewed, including air-gapped systems and bare-metal recovery from immutable storage that enable rapid data recovery with transactional consistency to a trusted state.

Data Repatriation: Movement of Data from the Cloud to Onsite Datacenters

Throughout the event, AI was a key focus, but the cloud was not forgotten, with many of the sessions also focused on that topic. Interestingly enough, some companies that migrated to the cloud found it too good to be true. On Wednesday, David Linthicum, an enterprise technology analyst, hosted the session, Why Some Companies are Kicking Cloud to the Curb. With standing-room only, it was an incredible session that explained the business landscape of data repatriation in about 15 minutes. David explained how some companies rushed into the Cloud with the onset of COVID, but by the end of ‘22, people had spent 2.5x what they thought they would. With unexpected costs such as ingress and egress fees, and the decreasing cost of hardware (the supply chain has improved since COVID) meant that cost was the primary motivator.

Consequently, a quiet new trend is happening with companies, Data Repatriation, which is the movement of data from the cloud to onsite datacenters. Ultimately, David discussed how infrastructure decisions must be decided based upon alignment with business objectives, cost-benefit analysis, and that Hybrid approaches may provide a good “in between.”

Exciting Dead and Company Performance

In the evening, “Dead and Company” played in the Sphere, which offered incredible visuals along with the classic set list of songs that we all know and love. The visuals zoomed in on the house in San Francisco where the band started, then slowly zoomed out and focused on outer space, giving beautiful views of the stars. By the end of the show, it zoomed back on the house and a beautiful illustration focusing on the band.

We very much enjoyed the show and engaging with our HPE Partners, the venue, and the Sphere. For more information on this event, please see our article, HPE Discover 2024 – Viva Las Vegas! in the July/August issue of The Connection.
