An energy provider needed to use its plant information management system (PIMS) to manage the work and materials flow for its nuclear power plants. PIMS is an IBM z/OS mainframe application. The energy provider needed to offload database reporting/querying activity, along with consolidating information from several source systems into an archival database repository to reduce costs.
HPE Shadowbase Solution: Asymmetric Capacity Expansion
In Figure 1, the PIMS IMS files are stored on an IBM zSeries database. Shadowbase heterogeneous data replication sends the files to an operational data store (ODS). The ODS is an Oracle database optimized for consolidation of the data from several source systems. Additionally, different plant systems submit information for consolidation and reporting purposes to the ODS that resides on a Solaris server. The data is subsequently replicated via Shadowbase heterogeneous data replication from the ODS to an Oracle database for an imaging application that is also hosted on a Solaris server.
- The provider uses heterogeneous replication to replicate data stored in the PIMS IMS files from IBM zSeries servers to an operational data store (ODS), residing on a Solaris server, where the data is used to support reporting/querying requirements. The ODS is built on an Oracle database.
- Once on the ODS, the data is then further replicated to other Solaris servers hosting an Oracle database for an imaging application.
- By offloading the reporting from the IBM mainframe, savings of over $1 million USD annually for disk (DASD) costs and CPU charges are attained.
- Additionally, near-real-time replication gives the users immediate access to current data for their queries, rather than day-old data provided by the prior implementation’s batch processing cycle.
